When former FBI Director Louis Freeh announced his findings last month in the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal, he questioned the culture at Penn State that failed to stop Sandusky. Vicky Triponey, a former Penn State Vice President of student affairs, was among the officials interviewed by Freeh’s investigative team. Triponey says she never knew Sandusky, but that during her four years at the school, she repeatedly clashed with Joe Paterno over secrecy in his program and how to discipline his players. She says she left her job in 2007 under fire from Paterno and University President Graham Spanier. In an interview with Steve Delsohn, Triponey reflects on the culture at Penn State and her battles with Paterno.

Teen-aged soccer player Bree McMahon of Orlando, Fla. had planned her life: following club soccer season in the fall, she’d star for her high school team and then choose where to continue her athletic career in college. But at the beginning of her senior year in September 2009, McMahon’s life was changed forever when she lost her left leg in a bizarre accident. Her senior year was crushed, but her ambition to play college soccer never wavered. Two and a half years after her accident, McMahon, with a prosthetic leg, staged a comeback at Brevard College proving that some dreams are worth holding on to.
