For Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the bigger and splashier, the better. His colossal stadium is one example of his visionary approach to football. But the billionaire team owner, hell-bent on doing it his way and constrained only by a salary cap, has exasperated fans who have seen a parade of coaches over the years and an 8-8 record during “America’s Team’s” last three seasons.
Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Don Van Natta Jr. received unprecedented access to Jones this summer, going one-on-one with him at Cowboys training camp, his house, owner’s suite, plane and at stops in Dallas and Arkansas. Jones discusses everything from not drafting Johnny Manziel and his stormy relationship with former Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson to his much-maligned tenure as the Cowboys’ general manager.
Van Natta will make guest appearances on SportsCenter (Thursday), NFL Live (Friday 4 p.m. ESPN2) and Sunday’s Outside the Lines.
Today, ESPN.com will present an extended, digital version of Van Natta’s ESPN The Magazine feature which showcases his unprecedented access with Jones, as he enters his 25th year as Cowboys’ owner and general manager. Jones makes hundreds of millions of dollars every year and is one of the NFL’s leading visionaries, but what he wants most — another championship — is the one thing he cannot buy.
