ESPN And ESPN Deportes Providing Comprehensive, Bilingual Coverage Of David Ortiz Story

On Sunday night, sports fans were shocked to learn that Boston Red Sox great David Ortiz was shot and wounded in his native Dominican Republic.

Throughout the night and today, ESPN and ESPN Deportes reporters Enrique Rojas and Marly Rivera have been documenting the story, providing updates on SportsCenter and other ESPN news and information platforms – including ESPN.com and ESPNDeportes.com – and transcribing Spanish-language news reports for fans on Twitter.

In a continued effort to document these events, today Rivera is traveling to Boston, while Rojas is in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

As of the most recent reports, Ortiz, a beloved figure in the Dominican Republic, in Boston, and across baseball, is reportedly in stable condition.

“The hardest part of covering a story like this, when it‘s an incident involving one of the most beloved figures in a country with a population of over 10 million people, is sorting through what is truth and what is speculation,” Rivera told Front Row. “We have to reach out to our multiple sources in the DR, and even when many of them are people we fully trust, the vetting process at ESPN has very high standards.

“We are lucky to have incredible journalists that we have collaborated with for many, many years in the Dominican Republic, in particular Dionisio Soldevila [a sports editor with Periodico Hoy, a newspaper in the Dominican Republic] and Ortiz’s friend and business assistant, Leo López. That collaboration with Dominican journalists, and well as Enrique’s close relationship with David’s father, Leo Ortiz, has been essential to our reporting.”
